Intruders cut a wire fence to steal fuel from a military garrison, the British Army has confirmed.

The incident happened at Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire on Saturday.

The fuel was stolen from a tanker belonging to a civilian contractor. The army said the Royal Military Police (RMP) and Wiltshire Police have been informed of the theft.

The crime has raised concerns about security at military bases.

It follows a breach which saw two RAF Voyager planes vandalised at RAF Brize Norton in June, which led to the UK government proscribing Palestine Action.

James MacCleary MP, Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, said: “It is alarming that the government doesn’t appear to have learnt any lessons from recent security breaches at other military locations.

“It is essential for British bases to remain totally secure, which is why the Liberal Democrats are calling for a full investigation into what happened.

In a statement, the army confirmed there was a “security breach” at Larkhall Camp on 4 October.

It added: “A wire fence was cut, and fuel was stolen from a tanker belonging to a civilian contractor.

“The Royal Military Police and Wiltshire Police were informed, and no other damage or theft was discovered.”
