The Bangor Mall sign is still standing Friday afternoon, despite officials saying it would be demolished.
The dilapidated sign was scheduled for demolition Friday, a representative for the mall owner, Namdar Realty Group, said in court on Sept. 22. No visible work was done to the sign and no equipment was set up as of 4:30 p.m., a Bangor Daily News photographer saw.
It’s the second time Namdar has failed to follow through on a promise to take care of the broken sign at the intersection of Hogan Road and Bangor Mall Boulevard. Namdar’s senior legal advisor, Daniel Giannini, said in January that the sign would be repaired.
Instead, he said in court in September that there was a months-long saga to figure out who owned the land around the sign and pull the required permits.
The city said it was owned by Bob’s Discount Furniture but the company’s corporate office said it wasn’t its property, Giannini said in court. In early September, the city said it was actually its property and no permits were needed, Giannini said.
That’s when he said demolition would happen Oct. 3.
Namdar and the city of Bangor did not respond to requests for comment.
The broken sign is one of the most visible reminders of the ongoing legal battle between the city of Bangor and Namdar. The city’s two lawsuits against the owner were scheduled for a final hearing on Sept. 22, however witnesses for Namdar testified for more than eight hours, leaving no time for the city to present witnesses.
The hearings have been “substantial and repetitive,” Judge Bruce Mallonee said that day. He asked the lawyers to consider depositions because he doesn’t want another day of hearings.
It’s unclear when the lawsuits will end.
