It’s officially October, which means spooky season is officially on. But that doesn’t mean you have to watch only horror movies.
On Prime Video, there are hundreds of different movies from a variety of genres — drama, comedy, romance and more.
This weekend, Watch With Us is recommending a movie from a different genre to suit your mood. Horror fans will love The Boy, while those looking for a good dramaedy will cozy up to The Family Man.
For all those rom-com fans out there, check out Return to Me, a charming 2000 film starring David Duchovny.
‘The Boy’ (2016)
Greta (Lauren Cohan) is an American nanny hired by an elderly English couple to care for their young son, Brahms. Sounds simple, right? But Brahms isn’t an ordinary boy — in fact, he’s not a boy at all. He’s a doll, a creepy-looking one at that, and he seems to move when Greta isn’t looking. When a series of accidents begins occurring during Greta’s stay, she decides to investigate who — or what — Brahms really is. What Greta finds is more shocking and frightening than she could’ve ever imagined.
7 New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video and More (Oct. 3-5)
An unexpected hit in 2016, The Boy is an unsettling horror-thriller that milks a lot of tension by using one of the oddest-looking dolls in movie history. There’s something inherently unsettling about a lifeline doll that doesn’t move, and The Boy capitalizes on that by crafting one skillful fright after another. The ending is surprisingly good, and it shares some surprising similarities with the more critically praised film, Parasite. The film spawned a sequel, Brahms: The Boy II, which should be avoided at all costs.
The Boy is streaming on Prime Video.
‘The Family Man’ (2000)
It’s not hard to imagine The Family Man, a drama about a successful man who wonders what life could’ve been like with a former girlfriend, being made in the 1940s with Frank Capra directing and James Stewart as the lead. Alas, the movie was made in 2000 with Brett Ratner behind the camera and Nicolas Cage as the main character. It’s not the classic it could’ve been, but it’s a decent enough movie to watch.
Cage stars as Jack, a man who has it all: a successful career as a Wall Street broker, a very active love life and a great New York City bachelor’s pad. But he still pines for his old girlfriend Kate (Téa Leoni), whom he hasn’t seen in 13 years. After an unusual meeting with a stranger known as Cash (Don Cheadle), Jack wakes up the next morning in an alternate reality, where he’s married to Kate and has three children. First annoyed, then confused, Jack eventually begins to cherish the new life that’s been offered to him. But is it real, or just a dream? And how long can it last?
The Family Man is unabashedly sentimental, but it’s successful at balancing its fantastical elements with realistic performances from its cast. Cage is in his Honeymoon in Vegas rom-com mode here, and reminds you why he can anchor pretty much any movie in any genre. Leoni is even better — her charismatic presence makes you understand why Jack would pine for her for over a decade.
The Family Man is streaming on Prime Video.
‘Return to Me’ (2000)
Bob (David Duchovny) is a successful Chicago architect still mourning the loss of his wife, Elizabeth (Joely Richardson), from a car accident a year ago. After a disastrous blind date at a local restaurant ends without a love connection, Bob finds himself drawn to his waitress, Grace (Minnie Driver). They soon strike up a romance, with Grace overcoming her shyness resulting from a scar on her chest due to a heart transplant surgery she had a year ago. As their relationship deepens, Grace discovers a shocking secret — her heart donor was Elizabeth! Should she tell Bob the heart he’s been trying to win over this whole time once belonged to his dead wife?

Return to Me has a premise that only exists in movies, but the rest of the film is fairly straightforward and somewhat realistic. The film’s two lovebirds have a laidback, casual chemistry that’s refreshing to watch, and the Chicago location provides an opportunity for viewers to see the very best the city has to offer. Return to Me is not a classic in the rom-com genre, but it’s a step above the recent straight-to-streaming offerings that lack the spark this film has in spades.
