Earlier this year, The Pitt proved that medical dramas are still all the rage. But it wasn’t the only top-notch doctor show to debut in 2025.
Like that Noah Wyle show, Doc premiered back in January to respectable ratings.
The series follows Dr. Amy Larson (Molly Parker), chief of internal medicine at a fictional Minneapolis hospital, who succumbs to a brain injury that wipes the last eight years of her memory.
Netflix just added the first season of Doc available to stream ahead of the premiere of season 2 on Fox on September 23, and it’s already proven to be a big hit with subscribers.
Read on to see why Watch With Us feels strongly that it shouldn’t be missed.
‘Doc’ Season 1 Ending Explained: Who Got Fired? Who Did Amy Choose?
‘Doc’ Is Based on an Incredible True Story
Doc is actually based on an Italian show called Doc – Nelle tue mani that premiered in 2020. But that show was itself based on a real man named Dr. Pierdante Piccioni. Piccioni was the former emergency room chief for the towns of Lodi and Codogno, and in 2013, he was involved in a car accident that caused him to forget the last twelve years of his life.
It seems as if twelve years of memory loss was a little too outlandish even for television, so Doc settles for Amy Larsen losing four years less than that. The series follows Larsen as she grapples with building a new life as well as returning to her medical field. Knowing that something like this happened in real life is crazy to think about while watching.
‘Doc’ Will Have You All in Your Feels
Doc is a melodrama verging on soap opera, so you’ll need to keep the tissues handy. While some may find the emotions to be overly maudlin, those of us who love a good cry will feel right at home. Watching Amy navigate the many hardships of her life that she no longer remembers, it’s hard not to feel the waterworks coming.
Having no recollection of her past eight years, Amy is suddenly confronted with a daughter who is instantly a teenager, a marriage that she’s no longer in, and a deceased child who left her with deep trauma. All three of these dynamics are already ripe for big, weepy feelings, and we say bring it on. Crying is therapeutic, after all.
Molly Parker Shines in a Tricky Role
Perhaps a lesser-known character actor, Molly Parker is no less talented. If you do recognize her name, you may be familiar with her from her work on Boardwalk Empire, House of Cards or Deadwood. She’s a real dynamite performer, and she puts her skills on full display in this new series.
Which ‘Doc’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning for Season 2?
On Doc, Parker is quite moving in her role as the newly revived Amy, and it’s a performance that anchors the entire show. She is both emotionally affecting as well as compelling. It’s a powerful, vulnerable part and a tricky dance to do — playing someone who has literally forgotten themselves. But Parker makes it look like easy work.
