Like many Bangor Daily News readers, I am exhausted, frustrated, and furious about gun violence. This year, there’s a step to make Maine safer: vote “yes” on Question 2.
It’s a red flag law, making it easier for guns to be taken out of the hands of people who are dangerous to themselves or to others. Currently, there’s a long procedure to do that, one which didn’t work to stop the 2023 Lewiston shooter, even though there were multiple complaints against him.
Question 2 would create an extreme risk protection order that lets family members or law enforcement ask the court to temporarily take away firearms from people believed to be showing dangerous behavior. Family members often know when someone is at risk. I believe this law would help them reduce that risk.
Vote “yes” on Question 2.
