‘Under the Silver Lake’ (2018)
If you’re in the mood to go down the rabbit hole of another conspiracy, you might be interested in Under the Silver Lake. The overtly Pynchon-inspired narrative follows a disillusioned young man named Sam (Andrew Garfield), who becomes transfixed by his beautiful new neighbor, Sarah (Riley Keough).
When Sarah vanishes, Sam embarks on an odyssey through the streets of LA to find her, decoding the trail of clues that have seemingly been left for him that lead to the murky underworld of Los Angeles. Comparable to the labyrinthine surrealism of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Under the Silver Lake is a moody mystery buoyed by creeping dread and curiosity. The film spurred a cult following who are as committed to unlocking the clues as Sam is.
‘Inherent Vice’ (2014)
After tuning into One Battle After Another, you should follow it up with Anderson’s first Pynchon adaptation, Inherent Vice. Another conspiracy film (the author has a penchant for conspiracies), Inherent Vice centers on Joaquin Phoenix’s amiable stoner detective, Doc Sportello. When Doc’s ex-girlfriend suddenly goes missing, his quest to find her unravels multiple plots involving a notorious real estate tycoon and a drug-smuggling ring.
As funny as it is baffling, Inherent Vice will probably leave you with more questions than answers. But fretting over these answers isn’t as important as simply turning on, tuning in and floating alongside the film’s wavelength. Bolstered by hilarious supporting performances from Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, Inherent Vice is a quirky and surprisingly emotional slice of neo-noir.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015)
While completely different plot-wise, if you’re looking for another film with high-powered, balls-to-the-walls energy, then Mad Max: Fury Road is a must-watch. A sequel film to director George Miller’s popular, Mel Gibson-starring post-apocalypse franchise from the mid-’80s, Fury Road sees Tom Hardy overtaking Gibson’s role in a film which matches — and maybe even surpasses — its forebears.
