The Prince and Princess of Wales and the prime minister are among those who have congratulated England on winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

The win, crushing Canada 33-13 at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham, west London, marked England’s third World Cup title, and their first since 2014.

Two tries by Alex Matthews, plus one each from Ellie Kildunne, Amy Cokayne and Abbie Ward sealed it for the Red Roses.

Among the first to congratulate the Red Roses were the Prince and Princess of Wales, who also praised Canada and said: “You had an outstanding tournament. Both teams should be so proud!”

Ahead of the final, the royals shared a photo of the princess with some of the Red Roses in cowboy hats.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also praised the team and said: “You have shown the very best of England and inspired a generation.”

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also called it an “incredible performance”, and added: “A proud moment for English rugby and for our country.”

After watching the game with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, London’s mayor Sir Sadiq Khan posted a photo of the pair while congratulating England.

“Huge congratulations to (the Red Roses) on their fantastic victory,” he said. “Another proud moment for women’s rugby.”

In his own post on social media, Mr Carney said: “On behalf of a proud nation, massive congratulations to Team Canada for an incredible run in the Rugby World Cup.”

Actor Russell Crowe – an avid rugby fan and, for this tournament, Canada supporter – also congratulated the Red Roses, saying on social media: “Got to hand it to England Women’s Rugby team.

“Solid, dominant and as it turns out, unbeatable on the day. Big game players every one of them. Bad luck Canada. You can hold your heads high. Remarkable run.”
