What will it take to make our children, our families, safe? Earlier this month in Utah, gun violence left two more children without a father. In Colorado, two more high school students were shot and will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. Two years ago here in Lewiston, 18 people were killed, and their families and friends are still mourning their deaths.
In Lewiston, Maine’s law failed to prevent a tragedy even though the shooter’s family knew he posed a threat. Current law requires law enforcement to find that a person in crisis is mentally unstable and poses a risk of harm. In November, we have a chance to simplify this process by letting family members go directly to court when a loved one is in crisis.
People in crisis need access to help, not guns. Please join Mainers, regardless of your political affiliation, in voting “yes” on Question 2.
