High Potential just confirmed Mekhi Phifer isn’t Morgan’s ex, Roman — so who does he actually play?
During the Tuesday, September 22, episode of the hit ABC series, Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) thinks Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) found Roman after a lead brings them to Nevada. While there, they tail a man (Phifer), only to discover — after sending a photo to Morgan — that he is not, in fact, Roman.
The man won’t tell Daphne and Oz who he is, but he does track down Morgan. Arthur introduces himself as a friend of Roman’s, who was asked to check in on Morgan and Ava (Amirah J). Based on Arthur’s business card, he works for a landscaping business and somehow crossed paths with Roman, who is still in hiding from the police.
In fact, Roman asked Arthur to find out how Morgan ended up working for the people her ex is now eluding. The last information the Los Angeles Police Department was able to dig up for Morgan was that Roman was an FBI informant, but she hasn’t learned any additional information regarding what led to his eventual disappearance.

The episode also wrapped up the ongoing story line involving the Game Maker (David Giuntoli). After the suspect — who revealed himself to be a man named Matthew — walked into the precinct, he faced off with Morgan. Matthew was clearly the person Morgan and the rest of Major Crimes was looking for in connection to several kidnappings, but he was able to avoid being directly connected to each case.
Morgan is able to track down the newest missing person, stop a possible murder and implicate Matthew. He tries to jump off a balcony to avoid prison time, but Morgan sees it coming and Matthew’s efforts are thwarted.
While Tuesday’s episode didn’t lead to the real Roman, executive producer and showrunner Todd Harthan previously spoke to Us Weekly about the balance that came with creating a procedural that has an overarching mystery.

“The number one thing that we try to build in the writers’ room is a compelling case that will also be really wonderful to watch Morgan’s complicated brain take you through,” he shared with Us in February. “That then is complimented by these wonderful detectives that are surrounding her. We know the audience — and we as the writers — have a big appetite for that serialized mystery. But the challenge is you don’t want that serialized component to overtake these wonderful cases that the audience looks forward to every week.”
He added: “Finding that balance is tricky and that’s why you have a staff of people that come in and keep you honest. They tell me, ‘If we reveal that then it really overtakes the next episode and upsets the balance.’ So it’s tricky and it is one of the harder parts of building each episode of the show.”
