Only Murders in the Building introduced a surprising story line for Steve Martin‘s Charles — who is now on testosterone.

During the Tuesday, September 23, episode of the hit Hulu series, Charles told Oliver (Martin Short) that his strange behavior was the result of the enhanced male hormone.

“My doctor asked me if I wanted to join a trial group for guys my age,” Charles said. “It’s supposed to build bone strength and give you energy. I think [it is working].”

Despite finding success with the results, Charles was also experiencing weird symptoms, adding, “My mouth tastes like pennies. Yesterday, I opened a pickle jar like it was no big thing. And I think it’s affecting my pheromones. I’m being followed by cats. If I’m being honest, I am also really fighting the urge to pick you up right now.”

Charles later went on a date with Sofia (Téa Leoni), which heated up in large part because of the hormones. He kept his options open though and revealed to Oliver and Mabel (Selena Gomez) that he was on a dating app for seniors called Last Gasp.

Martin, 80, has been having fun playing Charles since Only Murders in the Building premiered in 2021. As the show found success, Martin shocked viewers when he seemed to hint that he didn’t have any plans to continue acting after Only Murders in the Building came to an end.

“When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2022.

Martin noted that he had thought about retiring for a while.

“We were very happy just doing the live show,” he said, referring to his You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today! tour with Short, 75. “There may be a natural end to that — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty.”

One month later, Martin walked back the definitive comments about closing the door on acting.

“That’s a little overstated,” Martin explained to E! News. “They asked me, ‘Are you thinking about retirement?’ And I said, ‘Well, this is it. I’m doing a television show, I’ve got a book coming out and I’m touring with this guy. … So that kind of is my retirement. That’s what it’s going to look like.”

Short, for his part, argued that Martin could never fully escape the industry. “I can’t imagine him ever retiring,” he teased. “I hope not because then, you know … you know what happens to me.”

Only Murders in the Building airs new episodes Tuesdays on Hulu.
