Why does it seem like every time we go to vote on a referendum question, we seem confused when we read the ballot? Voter ID should be a straightforward question. Do you want Maine folks to show an ID to vote? My answer to this is a simple yes.
We need to show an ID for so many things in life now. We need an ID at some medical offices, to buy cigarettes, alcohol, or even to adopt a pet, and on and on. Why not have to show an ID to vote?
However, when you read the ballot, you may be confused. In my opinion, this is by design. I think Secretary of State Shenna Bellows worded it this way intentionally to try to get you to vote against it.
I believe she is trying to make it all about absentee ballot reform. Yes, you should pay for your own postage. This small expense should not fall on the taxpayer.
Changing the absentee ballot submission by two days is not a burden. I believe all the absentee ballot reform does is create a paper trail to ensure a real registered voter, not just someone no one knows, is requesting and submitting an absentee ballot.
I think it only makes sense to join the 36 other states that already require a version of this to help secure our elections against election fraud.
Please vote “yes” for this on Nov. 4 to secure our elections.
