Fox’s Murder in a Small Town allows Kristin Kreuk to work with a multitude of guest stars — but she’s specifically holding out hope that her former Smallville love interest Tom Welling will make an appearance.

“We’re really lucky that we get all these guest stars — and we get some spectacular guest stars. It’s amazing [even if] I don’t get to work with all of them,” Kreuk, 42, quipped during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly while promoting the show with costar Rossif Sutherland.

Kreuk revealed she has been “really trying” to get Welling, 48, on the show, adding, “Because I think that would be really fun.”

Based on novels written by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town follows a police chief named Karl (Sutherland) who — along with the help of others, including his girlfriend, Cassandra (Kreuk) — investigates mysterious murders. Season 1 featured guest appearances from James Cromwell, Stana Katic, Devon Sawa, Paula Patton and Noah Reid.

‘Smallville’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

Kreuk, meanwhile, got to reunite with her former Smallville costar Erica Durance.

“I think we did more scenes on an episode [of Murder in a Small Town] than we did the entire time we were on a Smallville,” Durance, 47, shared with Us in October 2024 during a joint interview with Kreuk, who added, “It was great because we got to have scenes together, which we really barely had when we were on Smallville together.”

Kreuk and Durance’s onscreen collaboration was years in the making.

“Erica and I have been talking about working together for years and trying to find projects that we can do that on,” Kreuk recalled. “This was serendipitous. It just was a show that was shooting around Vancouver — where we both live — and it was a fun role.”

Before collaborating on Murder in a Small Town, Kreuk and Durance appeared on Smallville, which premiered in 2001 and ran for 10 seasons on the WB and later the CW. The show followed a teenage Clark Kent (Welling) in his early days as a kid living on a farm with his adoptive parents Martha (Annette O’Toole) and Jonathan Kent (John Schneider).

Kreuk played Clark’s next-door neighbor and longtime crush Lana Lang, while Durance joined Smallville in 2004 as Lois Lane a.k.a Superman’s one true love. Despite getting to see her former costars at fan conventions, Kreuk teased attempts to do more on screen together.

“It’s funny because they were talking about [bringing] Michael Rosenbaum for a role [on Murder in a Small Town] at some point. Michael is a guy who likes to keep himself busy, but he doesn’t love traveling for work. He doesn’t like leaving Los Angeles that much — and even more specifically his home in Los Angeles,” Kreuk joked. “But he would’ve been great in the role. The actor that we ended up having in it was fantastic. But I think that if people are willing to say yes, there are many possibilities of who could come up and play a really interesting character because the guest star roles on Murder in a Small Town are often the most interesting.”

‘Murder in a Small Town’ Loses Main Cast Member Before Season 2

Sutherland, 46, meanwhile, told Us ahead of the show’s return on Tuesday, September 23, that he loved working with Joshua Close on season 2.

“He was absolutely wonderful. If this show goes again, I hope there’s room for him on it,” the actor said. “We’ve been very fortunate. Lots of people have come to play.”

Looking ahead at the next season, Sutherland praised Murder in a Small Town for hitting “the ground running instead of setting up the landscape.” Kreuk was just as excited to build on what season 1 already introduced.

“We don’t have to introduce as many people. So we get to delve into all these character story lines,” she teased. “We see more about what’s going on in the local community when it comes to the political situation.”

Murder in a Small Town returns to Fox Tuesday, September 23, at 8 p.m. ET.
