Kanye West had a rather tense moment with ex-mother-in-law Kris Jenner over medication, according to his new documentary.

West’s In Whose Name? documentary was released on Friday, September 19, and one moment from the film showed the 48-year-old rapper telling Jenner, 69, that he would “rather be dead” than medicated. The scene appeared to be filmed after West’s October 2018 visit to the White House with President Donald Trump.

“No one from the family has taken any responsibility for my hospital visit,” he yelled. “That’s 50 percent of what people say, at least. Am I lying?”

Elsewhere in the scene, West claimed that he was made to feel “like a piece of s***,” telling Jenner, “The only reason you got away with it is because I was medicated.”

Kanye West’s Most Intriguing Quotes of All Time

Jenner told West “it doesn’t matter” before the musician raised his voice and started screaming. Jenner’s boyfriend, Corey Gamble, could be heard off camera trying to de-escalate the situation.

“I haven’t finished the sentence,” Jenner continued. “It matters to us and you. It doesn’t matter what the internet says. It matters what we think, Ye.”

West stormed out before returning and asked: “So, what do you think? Did you have an effect on my mental health?”

Jenner said “yes,” and appeared emotional as she continued.

“I love you. I don’t want you to be not perfect,” she said. “I love you, and I want my daughter to love you the way you want her to love you.”

West appeared to be referring to his 2016 hospitalization. In 2018, the rapper revealed in an interview that he had been “diagnosed with a mental condition” at age 39.

“I think everybody got something,” he said at the time when promoting his Ye record. He shared on one song that he has bipolar disorder. “But like I said on the album, it’s not a disability. It’s a superpower.”

What Kim Kardashian Has Said About Kanye West Since Their Divorce

West married Kim Kardashian in 2014, and the former couple welcomed four kids — North, 12, Saint, 9, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 5 — throughout their time together. Kardashian, 44, filed for divorce from West in February 2021 and their split was finalized by November 2022.

Kardashian also appeared in West’s documentary and her appearance was previously teased when the first trailer dropped last month.

“Your personality was not like this a few years ago,” Kardashian said through tears. In a separate scene, West told his ex-wife, “Never tell me I’m gonna wake up one day and have nothing.”
