Canadian authorities have released the name of an Eastport man who died last weekend after his car plunged into the water off the city’s breakwater pier.
The body of Daryle Hall, 47, washed up Sunday near Wilson’s beach on the Canadian island of Campobello. Hall had identification with him, so the Royal Canadian Mounted Police contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to let them know they had found the Eastport man.
Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree of the sheriff’s office said Thursday that, according to Canadian authorities, Hall appeared to have sustained blunt force injuries consistent with a car crash.
Around the same time the office was contacted by Canadian law enforcement, Hall’s family called county officials to tell them he and his car had been missing since later Saturday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s department. Hall’s car was a red Mazda CX-5, the sheriff’s department said.
During their investigation, police discovered that a concrete curb on the pier had been damaged, and that pieces of red plastic that appeared to come from a car were next to it. They first used bottom-scanning equipment provided by the Eastport Port Authority, and later enlisted divers from a local aquaculture company, to eventually find Hall’s car at the bottom, in 45 feet of water next to the pier.
Crabtree said he believes officials in Canada will conduct an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.
