A Scarborough man died Saturday night after he crashed while fleeing from a police traffic stop on Interstate 295.
Jacob Brown, 34, was driving a gray 2021 Jeep Wrangler south on I-295, near mile marker 16 in Yarmouth, about 9:30 p.m. when troopers stopped him, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Troopers had received multiple calls about a driver in a similar vehicle driving erratically, beginning around mile marker 45 in Richmond, Moss said Monday morning.
During the stop, Brown sped away, and troopers gave chase. As the troopers caught up with Brown, troopers saw the Jeep veer off the right side of the highway, near mile marker 13 in Cumberland, and crash into the woods before becoming engulfed in flames, according to Moss.
Brown, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected.
Troopers pulled him away from the fire and tried to keep him alive, but Brown succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
