Netflix Renews ‘Hunting Wives’ for Season 2 After Major Book Changes

The Hunting Wives has officially been renewed for a second season after making some big changes from the book.

Netflix announced on Friday, September 12, that The Hunting Wives is returning. “I’m so excited to write these amazing characters again, and I can’t wait to take the audience on another sexy, twisted, bats*** crazy ride through Maple Brook,” showrunner Rebecca Cutter released a statement.

Brittany Snow, Malin Åkerman, Jamie Ray Newman, Dermot Mulroney, Evan Jonigkeit and George Ferrier are all confirmed to return as season 2 picks up with Sophie (Snow) and Margo (Åkerman) “on the outs.”

“But soon enough, old secrets and new foes force them back together,” the official synopsis continued. “As they play their dangerous games the question arises. Are they the hunters or the hunted?”

What ‘The Hunting Wives’ Cast Has Said About the Book Changes in the Show

Based on May Cobb’s book of the same name, The Hunting Wives introduced Us to Sophie, who moved from Boston to an East Texas town where she found herself drawn to prominent socialite Margo. While some became invested in the murder at the center of the series, The Hunting Wives also provided plenty of entertainment with drinking and steamy onscreen hookups.

Before it premiered, the show was slated to air on Starz but Netflix ultimately got exclusive licensing rights in the U.S. for one year after Lionsgate Television acquired rights to The Hunting Wives back from Starz. According to Friday’s press release, The Hunting Wives “will release exclusively as a Netflix branded series in nearly all countries Netflix is available, with the original cast set to reprise their roles.”

Fans have been waiting for news about a second season ever since the finale, which premiered in July, made major changes from Cobb’s book. Those who have read the novel know that Jill (Katie Lowes) killed her son Brad’s (Ferrier) girlfriend after Abby got pregnant and refused to get an abortion. Jill subsequently killed Margo (named Margot in the book) because she knew about her friend’s affair with her teenage son as well.

Biggest Differences Between Netflix’s ‘The Hunting Wives’ Show and the Book

The eight-part series, however, took a large departure from the original plot by having Margo as the one who got pregnant with Brad’s baby. Margo had an abortion and ultimately killed Abby, which Sophie figured out in the season 1 finale. Sophie was about to give Margo up before Margo’s brother got involved and Sophie ended up killing Kyle (Aaron Milligan).

Cutter previously teased plans for a second season when speaking to Variety in July, saying there is “a little bit of a time jump — not a year, but a time.” She also hinted that “it would be smart” to have a new murder mystery in the next season, adding, “I don’t know whodunit yet or who got done!”

Author Cobb also showed support for a continuation. “I feel like there is so much more story to be told,” Cobb told CBS 19 in July. “It ends on a cliffhanger, and also, the cast and crew were so wonderful. We all just want to get back together and work together again.”

The Hunting Wives is currently streaming on Netflix.
