Make no bones about it, the “Voter ID” referendum is not really just about that. If it were, it would be only about showing an ID to vote. But it’s not because it loads up the law with voter restrictions, apparently to suppress votes.
And guess who was proposing it? Firebrand Republican state Rep. Laurel Libby who seems to think it’s OK to dox a teenager. This is, I believe, a partisan effort to exclude people who likely don’t support Libby’s brand of telling others what to do.
Recently a friend told me about going to the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch to renew her ID because online reservations were booked for over three months and voting is less than three months away. She waited about four hours and lost most of her workday. Another disabled lady had the same experience, and I am sure it was not easy for her getting rides to and from the license branch.
Unfortunately, people have been told the Big Lie repeatedly that there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. Over 60 legal challenges and investigations found this to be
false. I believe you owe it to yourself to vote “no” on this voter suppression referendum.
