I spent many years as a social studies teacher at the elementary grades and as a history teacher at high school. At every grade level, I taught about voting as a right as well as responsibility.
Without revealing my political leanings, we talked about current events a great deal. I allowed my students the opportunity to take sides on issues and then asked them how they would vote. We compared our results to any polls we found in the media. Every discussion ended with a reminder about how important it was to think through one’s position and vote on it when given the opportunity.
I always stressed that voting is the right and responsibility of citizens and should never be squandered, shared or given away. Subsequently, to me it’s just common sense to be asked to show your ID to vote.
Vote “yes” with me on Nov. 4.
