Having worked alongside many in the business community here in Maine, I understand how important customers are to the health of their business. For many, engaging with their customers, making tailored recommendations, and sharing special promotions is what keeps them excited to put in the work it takes to be a small business owner. They rely on digital marketing and backend data to facilitate these relationships, and without these resources, their businesses would suffer.
Right now, our state is facing serious challenges. Tourism has taken a hit due to rising tensions with Canada, the cost of living has increased, and the lack of clear federal privacy laws is putting our businesses in a tough position. Without clarity, it is hard for our local businesses to grow and continue to compete with other markets across state borders.
Now more than ever, Mainers need reasonable and consistent data privacy policies. Without these, businesses are forced to navigate a confusing patchwork of rules and may be subjected to compliance costs that are especially hard for small businesses to afford. Smart data privacy regulations ensure that consumer data is protected and businesses have uninterrupted access to the tools they need to reach their customers.
The 2025 Legislature missed an opportunity to pass workable data privacy legislation. During this time of economic uncertainty, Mainers need balanced policy that supports both our business community and consumers.
