As I was leaving the polling place in 2024, a young woman approached me to sign her petition to prevent voter fraud. I asked, is this really a problem? I recall she essentially said, well no, not here. So true.
The campaign supporting Question 1 on the November ballot was launched by the right-wing Dinner Table PAC, who claim we should all be concerned about massive voter fraud, when in fact, it barely exists. Why spend millions pushing an answer to a problem that doesn’t exist? I think it can only be because the proponents of Question 1 believe it will be to their advantage to suppress the vote.
If Question 1 were passed, it would be one of the most restrictive voter ID laws in the country. It is also an attack on absentee voting, which nearly 45 percent of Mainers chose for their votes in 2024.
Maine’s current election and voting processes are recognized nationally for making voting accessible for voters, whether they are disabled, lack transportation or work out of town. When it comes to voting, Maine is a leader, with one of the highest voter turnouts in the country. Maine should be proud to be a leader for voter-friendly elections.
