The list of President Donald Trump’s constitutional abuses is too lengthy for any one letter to the editor. One source divides his attacks on the Constitution into categories. Even this list is long, but in part, it includes: impoundment of congressionally appropriated funds; firing of federal prosecutors and inspectors general; abuse of executive orders; separation of powers violations; refusal to comply with court orders; and invocation of the Alien Enemies Act.
That this is the “short list” is a warning siren of what is to come. Without a doubt, I believe this regime has changed our nation so much that the democracy established by the country’s founders no longer exists. And, it seems to have taken many of us by surprise.
The typical media presentations of these on-going attempts to usurp the constitutional grounding of the United States names the administration’s action, but rarely begins the report with a headline that states that Trump’s actions are unconstitutional. That particular piece of information, if it’s there at all, is often buried somewhere in the body of the story.
For every U.S. citizen, the idea that the Constitution is being shredded should be horrifying. That the collapse of our form of government is, I believe, virtually complete should have citizens up in arms against this regime. They are not.
It’s time for the media to make it crystal clear that Trump is running roughshod over the documents (the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution) that define who we are as a nation. We need to see this in bold print and shouted by every reporter.
