For much of Bucksport’s history the paper mill has been the major taxpayer. Other (non-mill) towns, of similar size, have not had this advantage and have had to establish a perhaps more balanced tax base, business and residential. Now that the mill has closed the former tax base has changed. The community is trying to adjust to a tax base more similar to communities that never had the advantage of one major taxpayer.
Now It’s not fair to blame the local town government for trying to adjust to the current situation. Cutting back on infrastructure improvements and services is not the answer. That will result in a town that sadly will look like a former mill town.
