It was a beautiful, sunny, breezy, late-summer Sunday in Bangor. We came home from church expecting to be able to open the windows, enjoy the breeze, and relax. But can we?
No! All afternoon, with our windows and doors closed, we experienced the throbbing beat of the latest assault of the noise and disruption from the Waterfront Concert venue, and the concert didn’t even begin until 7 p.m.!
It wasn’t bad enough that there were several concerts already the previous week, running well past our accustomed bedtime and necessitating running the air conditioner to overcome the concert noise, but the upcoming schedule promises “closed window afternoons and evenings” not only tonight, but Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, just in this week!
These events may be bringing money into Bangor, but I believe it’s at the expense of the quality of life of neighboring residents. Not only the noise, but also the traffic, the crowded parking on neighborhood streets (to avoid paying $20 or more at various locations), the trash on the streets and sidewalks, and the disturbance of the vehicles leaving the crowded neighborhood streets after the concerts end.
I hope that the city council and city government are pleased with what they’ve done and are doing to “life in Bangor.” Perhaps a tax rebate for those within (involuntary) earshot of the concert noise and inconvenience — no doubt a large area and not excluding Brewer — is in order?
