Question 1, which will appear on Maine’s November ballot, is described by some as a “voter ID question.” But Maine’s secretary of state observed that only a small portion of the proposed bill on which the referendum is based ( LD 1149) deals with voter ID issues; the vast majority focuses on suppressing absentee voting.
Shenna Bellows, Maine Secretary of State, wrote the ballot description of the referendum to reflect the bill’s true purpose. For example, among other things, the referendum would eliminate two days of absentee voting and would end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities.
Representatives of “Voter ID for ME” sued Secretary Bellows over this ballot description, but in July, Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court ruled that her description was accurate and would remain on the ballot.
Please vote in November and vote “no” on Question 1.
