A road construction project at the intersection of Route 1 and Swan Lake Road in Belfast is causing traffic delays.
Traffic was backed up significantly Friday morning, leaving some commuters stuck in place for up to an hour, several drivers said.
Work is being done to repave part of Route 141, also known as Swan Lake Road. A construction crew was using a milling machine on the pavement, but took a lunch break between 12:30 and 1:10 p.m. Friday, allowing traffic to briefly flow without interruption.
More congestion is expected Friday afternoon, according to a worker on the project.
“It’s summer, that’s the time to pave it, you can’t pave in the winter,” said the worker, who declined to give his name.
A dispatcher with the Belfast Police Department said the department had gotten complaints about the traffic jam, but declined further comment, directing further inquiries to Maine Department of Transportation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transportation did not have an immediate comment Friday after but said it was looking into the matter.
