Amanda Knox made headlines when she was wrongfully accused of — and arrested for — her roommate Meredith Kercher’s murder in Italy — but where is she since her exoneration?

Knox was thrust into the spotlight in 2007, after her roommate was murdered in Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison and served time behind bars before being cleared and exonerated in 2015.

During her interrogation in 2007, Knox, then 20, accused her then-boss Patrick Lumumba of murder, which led to his arrest and two-week incarceration. Knox signed two statements prepared by police regarding her accusation before eventually walking back the claims.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2023 that Knox’s rights were violated during the interrogation that ultimately led to her accusation against Lumumba. As a result, Italy’s supreme court ordered a retrial at the appellate court level.

What to Know About Hulu’s ‘Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ After Murder Trial

Knox was ultimately reconvicted of slander in June 2024 by an Italian court. She originally was convicted in 2009 of slander for falsely accusing Lumumba of murdering Kercher, and the appellate court upheld that conviction nearly two decades after Kercher’s murder.

Following her legal issues overseas, Knox used her experience to become an advocate for criminal justice reform and to fight for the rights of the wrongfully accused and convicted.

“This is not a response. This is a proactive approach to me thinking about and grappling with the ripple effects of this trauma that exploded my life,” she exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2025. “[It is about] how I grappled with owning what’s mine, recognizing the mistakes that I made along the way and really trying to address what I think is a really interesting dilemma in the true crime world. It is this idea that human beings that you hear about in a true crime context only exist within that true crime context.”

At the time, Knox pointed out how usually people in high-profile true crime cases are eventually forgotten, adding, “You hear about the crime, you hear about their arrest, you hear about the trials, you hear about how long they spent in prison, and then when they get out of prison, they’re out. They have their first hamburger after they get out of prison, and then it is the end of the story. You don’t often hear this incredible journey that they go on afterwards to be like, ‘Oh, my God, now that I’ve proven my innocence, now what is my life?’”

Knox’s story will once again be explored in Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. Keep scrolling to see where Knox is now:

Knox was accused in 2007 of murdering her roommate Kercher while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison after she and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were both convicted of the crime, despite a lack of evidence.

An appellate court later found the former couple not guilty in 2011, but three years later were again found guilty again during a retrial. The Italian supreme court cleared Knox of Kercher’s murder in 2015 and she was exonerated.

Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was sentenced in 2008 to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder after his DNA was identified at the crime scene. His sentence was later reduced, and he was released from prison in November 2021.

In 2013, Knox released a memoir about her experience titled Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir. She was also interviewed in the years since and took part in Netflix’s 2016 documentary Amanda Knox.

After several years of dating, Knox married author Christopher Robinson in 2020. The couple share two kids, born in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Knox released a second memoir about her experience in 2025, titled Free: My Search for Meaning.

“Writing has always been therapeutic for me. So I’ve been writing this book for many, many years. Some of the things that I incorporated into it were from pieces that I wrote ages ago — and all of them were about processing various aspects of this experience that I went through and trying to understand what they meant — if they meant anything,” Knox exclusively told Us in March 2025. “Does it mean anything that a girl had a crush on me in prison and I had to navigate that weird awkward situation? Or does it mean anything to me — or to anyone that I trusted — that someone who told me he was a wrongly convicted person turned out to be a liar and I got taken advantage of in a very dangerous situation? Was that just stupid or is there something to that?”

She continued: “Was that experience a ripple effect of a trauma that originated when a young man broke into my home and raped and murdered my roommate? All of these things and how they connected is the really beautiful takeaway for me writing this. It was me realizing the relationships that I have with people after feeling so ostracized and singled out.”

Later that year, Hulu released a limited series inspired by the story of how Knox “was wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.”

The eight-part series starred Grace Van Patten as Knox as well as Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico and Roberta Mattei. Before The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premiered, Knox spoke to Us about her “gratitude” for the chance to tell her story.

“It really comes down to this idea of do I have a voice and does my voice matter in how a story is told? That is what Hulu has recognized, and they’re taking a chance on that to say, ‘Yes, actually the subject does have a perspective that is valuable and that matters,’” she noted in March 2025. “And we don’t have to pretend that this world is full of objective screenwriters who are not bringing their own stuff to the project. I think that that’s a really interesting experiment that is being made right now.”

Knox recalled her experience on set, adding, “And of course, I’m really honored to work alongside Monica [Lewinsky], who is my mentor. She’s executive producing as well. I can’t speak a lot about it yet because we’re still in production. But I’ll just say that it is another manifestation of me having the opportunity to be recognized as someone who has a valuable perspective.”
