Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra’s mother, Elma, was reportedly asked about unfounded claims that the late fashion designer secretly battled cancer ahead of her tragic death at age 33.
Elma was allegedly asked by detectives investigating Nolan-O’Slatarra’s death aboard a yacht in New York about whether her daughter had been battling brain cancer, according to the Irish Independent. The outlet reported that Elma was “astounded” by the claims and said Nolan-O’Slatarra was “perfectly healthy.”
News broke on August 5 that Nolan-O’Slatarra had been found dead while aboard a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club.
“We are saddened to learn of the tragic incident that took place,” a spokesperson for the Montauk Yacht Club said in a statement at the time. “Our team is cooperating with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and remains committed to the safety and well-being of our guests and staff. We have no further comment at this time.”

Nolan-O’Slatarra’s relatives have since been searching for answers surrounding the circumstances of her death.
“They want more details,” attorney Arthur Aidala told the New York Post on Wednesday, August 13. “The circumstances surrounding this are far from typical. They would like to know anyone who was with Martha that evening. Earlier that evening, at the time of the actual incident, we know one person who was there. Was anyone else around?”
Aidala also held a press conference on Wednesday, claiming to reporters that “people are still being questioned” in the investigation.
“The family has had a sit-down with the Suffolk County homicide detectives,” Aidala said. “They are doing a deep, deep dive, a deep investigation.”
Nolan-O’Slatarra was the founder of the East x East clothing brand, which is described as a “sustainable resortwear brand” on its website.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news regarding Martha Nolan and extend our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones,” a rep for the boutique said in a statement. “While Martha was not an employee of Gurney’s, we were proud to host her East x East pop-up and admired her entrepreneurial spirit and creative vision.”
