A bald eagle found injured along the roadside in Bar Harbor on Wednesday has died.
The eagle was fighting with another bald eagle when they became interlocked and came down on the road, according to Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Wildlife control agents captured the eagles Wednesday night and brought them to Acadia Wildlife Center in Bar Harbor for examination. One of the bald eagles died from a severe spinal injury, Latti told the Bangor Daily News in an email.
The other eagle suffered a severe fracture and was brought to a veterinarian in Greater Bangor to determine whether the bird can be treated.
Maine is home to more than 800 nesting pairs of bald eagles, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Nearly 60 years ago, there were just 21 nesting pairs and the bald eagle was close to disappearing from Maine altogether. The bald eagle’s recovery has allowed it to be removed from the federal and state endangered species lists.
