An Old Town man was arrested late last week for allegedly sexually assaulting a young child.
Corey Cox, 28, has been charged with gross sexual assault, according to Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster.
The investigation into Cox began in August 2023 after he allegedly sexually assaulted a child under age 10, Lancaster said Wednesday morning.
After obtaining an arrest warrant, police took Cox into custody on Friday.
Cox made his initial appearance in Somerset County Unified Criminal Court on Monday. His bail was reduced from $10,000 to $2,500, and he is prohibited from containing the victim and the victim’s immediate family, Lancaster said.
Cox remained in the Somerset County Jail in Madison as of Wednesday morning.
Over that two-year investigation, the Fort Fairfield Police Department, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Kennebec and Somerset Counties, and the Somerset County district attorney’s office worked together to compile enough information to support an arrest warrant, according to Lancaster.
“This is an example of the importance of agencies working together with the common goal of holding perpetrators accountable for such horrific crimes. Without the collaboration between the Fairfield Police Department, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, and the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office, this arrest would not have been possible,” Lancaster said.
