STONINGTON — Broadway is coming to Stonington as four veteran Broadway entertainers bring their soaring voices to the stage for two concerts at the Stonington Opera House.

Opera House Arts  favorites John McVeigh and Fred Rose will be joined by Cynthia Kauffman and Mollie Vogt-Welch for this popular annual event. They will be accompanied by Sean Forte on piano.

“Opening Doors” on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. will include songs exploring new horizons and some of contemporary musical theatre’s biggest hits. On Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. our singers will return with “Sunday on Broadway”, a matinee performance of Broadway classics and tunes that will leave you humming all day long.

McVeigh has performed principal roles with the Metropolitan Opera since 1997, and has appeared in almost every major opera house in the United States. A Stonington resident, he also serves as vice chair of the board of directors of Opera House Arts.

Rose has appeared on Broadway in the Tony-winning productions of “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Cabaret”, “Porgy and Bess”, John Doyle’s revival of “Company with Raul Esparza” and “Cyrano” with Kevin Kline.

Some regional roles for Cynthia Kaufman include “Tootsie” at Maine State Music Theater, “Beautiful” and “Annie Get Your Gun” at the New London Barn, “Sound of Music” at Beef and Boards, “Cabaret” at the Eclipse Theatre and in NYC: “Ribbit” by Paul Gordon for Streaming Musicals.

Vogt-Welch has been seen on Broadway in “A Tale of Two Cities”, as well as the National Tours of “Camelot” and “Peter Pan”. She is also a frequent performer at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.

Forte is a Brooklyn-based musical director working in a variety of genres, styles and settings. Forte works as a musician for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows that have included “Sunset Boulevard”, “Cabaret”, “Here We Are” and “Hadestown”.

This program is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors Vicki and Peter Bartholow, J. McVeigh Jewelry and the Anahata Foundation.

Tickets range from $39-$59. People ages 17 attend for half price and tickets are free for Hancock County students. For more information and to purchase tickets visit operahousearts.org or call 207-367-2788.

The Stonington Opera House is a historic center of culture and entertainment, a performance space, and a civic gathering place. Our work is rooted in the belief that access to and participation in the arts transforms lives.

The Stonington Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and in 1999, it was rescued by the founders of Opera House Arts, a 501 (c) 3, that was established specifically to restore this historic building to its original purpose.

A cornerstone of a year-round, vibrant Main Street located at the top of the busiest commercial fishing pier in Maine, the Stonington Opera House is an economic engine for the creative economy of Deer Isle.
