U.S. Customs and Border Patrol on Tuesday announced that its agents arrested a Colombian member of the South American Theft Group in the midcoast town of Union on July 30.
The agency did not identify the person or provide details about how they were identified and apprehended.
The federal agency said the person was in the U.S. illegally and had an active arrest warrant from New Jersey for burglary. Additionally, CBP said the person had previously been apprehended by Border Patrol agents for attempting to cross into the U.S. in El Paso, Texas, in June 2022.
Additionally, they were “flagged as a potential national security threat and confirmed as a member of the South American Theft Group, which engages in transnational organized crime,” according to CBP.
They are being transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations for detention, according to CBP.
