A yes vote on the ballot question regarding voter ID will, I believe, enhance the integrity of the election process in Maine. It is vitally important to be able to trust the outcome of an election.
As a former resident in New Hampshire, which has voter ID, I can attest that it is a seamless issue to present ID. Every person, regardless of their circumstances, can get some form of ID acceptable for the vote. I don’t think anyone is suppressed.
Once voter ID is adopted the state Legislature can make provision for everyone who is eligible to obtain an ID for free. This, at present, is certainly not difficult nor is it expensive. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles supplies non-driver’s license state photo IDs
I believe some citizens carry the misconception that voter ID would be expensive and cumbersome. I don’t think this is true. Are these individuals also against the requirements necessary to obtain a Social Security card? Is getting a Social Security card out of reach for citizens? The answer is no.
A few things come to mind that people were once against, such as bans on smoking in public places, seat belts in cars, car seats for children, universal kindergarten, protecting the environment, the original passage of the Social Security Act, and countless others; and yet we can all look back and agree they were a good ideas.
Protecting the integrity of elections is a good idea. Please vote for voter ID in the November election.
