Firefighters from several towns battled a late Friday fire on an island in Pushaw Lake, according to Hudson Fire & Rescue.
The fire, which was reported around midnight, destroyed a couple of small buildings and one firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
When firefighters first responded to the scene, they weren’t sure whether anyone was on the island. No one was found, and no civilians were reported injured.
Accessing the island posed a challenge, especially in the dark and in the lake’s shallow waters, the department said. Fire crews from Bradford, Glenburn, Old Town, the Maine Forest Service and G&H Ambulance assisted.
Most of the fire has been extinguished, but crews remained on scene Saturday to monitor hot spots. The blaze has burned into the ground in several areas and is expected to smolder for days.
Fire officials warned boaters on the lake to expect smoke in the coming days and advised the public to avoid the island because of hazardous rocky terrain and lingering fire conditions.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
