For the first time, a team from Machias is representing Maine in the Little League New England Region tournament.
The Down East team hosted and won the state tournament last week and earned a spot in the four-team regional competition in Bristol, Connecticut.
That double-elimination regional action gets under way on Saturday. The winner advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
“We are beyond proud to announce that the 2025 Maine State Major League Baseball Champions are our very own hometown heroes,” Machias Area Little League said in a July 25 Facebook post.
The post noted that this is the first team from the Machias league to make it to this level of the Little League tournament.
The Machias squad earned its trip to Connecticut with a 7-4 victory over the Capital Area Little League team from Augusta, according to the post.
First up for Machias in the regional tournament will be the Massachusetts champion from Braintree American Little League. That game will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the East Region Headquarters in Bristol. The tournament will stretch until Thursday, Aug. 7 when a regional champion will be crowned.
Admission to the regional tournament games are free. Some of the games will be streamed on ESPN+, which requires a subscription, and the others will be broadcast on ESPN.
