A popular Bangor bakery purchased the building directly across from it on State Street, with tentative plans for how to use the space.
Frank’s Bake Shop bought the former pharmacy at the corner of State Street and Forest Avenue earlier this year. The building sits directly across from Frank’s storefront at 199 State St.
Northern Light Pharmacy most recently used the building but moved out in May. Before that, it was occupied by Miller Drug, which opened the location in 1957. It was previously a variety store that opened in 1939.
This year marks the 85th anniversary of Frank’s, which has been at the State Street location for 83 of those years. The bake shop offers an expansive menu ranging from baked goods to specialty sandwiches.
Frank’s owner, Brett Soucy, said the bakery had been looking at buying the building at 200 State St. since February. With the sale finalized, construction and changes to the building will take six to 12 months before it’s used.
The final product will be mixed-use with commercial spaces and apartments, Soucy said. There is no set amount of spaces that will be available for rent because plans haven’t been decided on yet, Soucy said.
He’s looking forward to what the building turns out to be.
“Our intention is just to make that look a lot better and hopefully grow the community a little bit more,” Soucy said.
The businesses that would use the commercial space are uncertain, including if Frank’s will keep a spot for itself.
