With the help of local businesses, the town of Arrowsic is finally removing an abandoned boat filled with used needles.
The sportfishing boat Hook, Line and Sinker had been anchored in the Kennebec River since last August, but it broke free in February before drifting onto mudflats, where it has remained.
Its removal has presented a challenge for the small town, in part because of the cost to do so and the many hypodermic needles strewn across the boat. Those needles may have been used to inject methamphetamine.
It will cost up to $27,000 to remove the boat.
Arrowsic is being helped by Bath Iron Works, Reed & Reed and an anonymous donor to pay for the removal.
On Monday, crews patched holes in the hull and planned to float the Hook, Line and Sinker during high tide on Tuesday afternoon so the boat can be removed and disposed of, according to a spokesperson for Bath Iron Works.
