The Hunting Wives almost looked very different.
After the Netflix show premiered on Monday, July 21, Jana Kramer, revealed via her Instagram Stories that she was close to playing Callie, the role that ultimately went to Jaime Ray Newman.
Kramer, 41, also took to her “Whine Down” podcast to discuss the audition. “I got pinned for it. It’s really hard in this industry to test. It’s so hard to get to that place. Even at auditions, there’s so many people that audition,” she said on Monday.
Kramer clarified that to “get pinned” meant they wanted her on the cast.

“You’re on deck. You’re pinned is, like, you’re available. They want you and you’re saving those dates. You are this close to tasting it,” she noted. “[When I didn’t get cast on] The Hunting Wives, I cried for, like, three days. I was so upset.”
“I understand that everything always happens for a reason. but that starts to wear us out a little,” she continued. I” am incredibly blessed for everything. I’m on my fourth movie this year. I’m so excited and I’m so grateful. It’s just I have been trying so hard to get back on a show once I’ve gone full force back into acting. I left One Tree Hill to do music and I’m so grateful that I pursued that for as many years as I did. But to get back on a show is so much harder than people think.”
Based on May Cobb‘s novel of the same name, The Hunting Wives follows Sophie (Brittany Snow) after she relocated from Boston to an East Texas town, where she found herself drawn to prominent socialite Margo (Malin Åkerman). After joining a clique of wealthy, conservative housewives with a passion for guns and cocktails, the newcomer fell into “a rabbit hole of obsession, seduction and murder,” according to the official synopsis.

Kramer revealed on Monday that The Hunting Wives wasn’t the only show she nearly booked recently.
“I had a really good feeling about this last audition [after The Hunting Wives]. It would have been a huge spinoff show for me to get. I was in the mix and I got the text from my manager being like, ‘Hey, their offer is out to this person so if they don’t accept then you’re next.’ But this person is going to accept,” Kramer said. “This person, I know their show just got canceled and they’re perfect for the role. I’ve been up against her a few times for things.”
Kramer continued: “It’s a great role and this is awesome for her. But it was one of those moments where I was like, ‘When will it be my turn?’ I’ve worked so hard. I want this. I want to be back on a show again and that is my dream.”
Despite feeling discouraged, Kramer isn’t giving up.
“I know it’s going to happen. I’m so sick of saying that [though]. Because everyone’s like, ‘You’re right there. You’re going to get it.’ I’ve been saying this for 20 years. It’s been 15 years since I’ve been off One Tree Hill,” she added. “I know people deal with this. But it’s OK for us to not be OK sometimes.”
