Bangor Daily News Outdoors contributor Erin Merrill discussed her feelings of capturing a coyote on a trail camera behind her house. Seeing a predator this close to home evokes mixed emotions for many.
But what about when they’re calling out right behind your house like the ones I captured here?
Would you run and grab a rifle hoping to catch one on the edge of the timber? Would you grab your small dog and run inside, or would you be elated to know you’re sharing the wild, remote woods with an animal that keeps the rodent population in check?
These vocalizations happen every night outside my back door, and for me, this is the soundtrack to rural living I look forward to. Whatever your reaction, there’s no denying this chorus is a good one, and it’s a reminder that wilderness exists in pockets closer to home than we might expect.
