Wednesday has scored a season 3 renewal — and a spinoff — weeks before the show returns to Netflix.

The hit series was renewed on Wednesday, July 23, before the season 2 premiere. Showrunner Alfred Gough and Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria released a statement confirming that there is also a Wednesday spinoff in the works.

“It’s something we’re definitely noodling. There are other characters we can look at,” Gough teased.Bajaria added, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”

Viewers were introduced to a new version of the iconic Wednesday Addams character when the show premiered in November 2022. Before Jenna Ortega took over as the moody and spooky teenager, Christina Ricci famously brought the character to life in several Addams Family films, which took inspiration from Edward Gorey‘s illustrations.

The first season followed the titular character’s attempts to master her psychic powers at Nevermore Academy while dealing with a killing spree at the hands of a mysterious monster. Season 2 drops in two parts on August 6 and September 3 and picks up after a time jump with most of the cast returning alongside some new additions.

According to the official synopsis, the sophomore season follows Wednesday returning to school after becoming the savior of Nevermore. She then prepares to save the day again after getting visions of Enid’s (Emma Myers) impending death.

Wednesday also stars Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer and Moosa Mostafa. Jamie McShane, who was a series regular in the first season, has been moved to guest star status. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo were promoted to series regulars.

So far, Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter and Noah Taylor were announced as new series regulars. Meanwhile, Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, Frances O’Connor, Heather Matarazzo, Joonas Suotamo and Lady Gaga are confirmed to appear as guest stars.

Which TV Shows Are Renewed in 2025-2026?

While there is no information on the spinoff yet, Us Weekly has already compiled a wishlist of potential ideas after creators Gough and Miles Millar previously hinted at conversations with Netflix about expanding the Wednesday universe.

“When you create a world like this, the intention is any one of these characters could be the lead in their own show,” Gough told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2022. “Certainly it’s cast that way, when you have Fred Armisen, when you have Catherine Zeta-Jones, when you have Luis Guzmán. It’s certainly something we’ve discussed and would very much like to, in success, really branch out this world beyond just Wednesday.”

Season 1 of Wednesday is currently streaming on Netflix. Season 2 premieres on August 6 and then returns for part 2 on September 3.
