STONINGTON — Considered one of Maine’s finest musical ensembles, the DaPonte String Quartet will perform at the Burnt Cove Church Community Center on Thursday, July 31 at 7 p.m., presented by Opera House Arts.
“The Burnt Cove Church has exceptional acoustics and is a perfect setting for chamber music. We are delighted to have DaPonte return this summer,” states Opera House Arts Artistic Director Kathryn Markey.
Formed in Philadelphia 33 years ago, the DaPonte String Quartet surprised the musical world by moving from a cosmopolitan urban area to rural Maine. They are proud to call Maine home and are deeply rooted to the mid-coast region.
The Quartet’s repertoire spans the entire history of music, from 17-century works on original instruments to cutting-edge contemporary quartets, like the one written for them by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici. Fresh conception requires original thought, and the DSQ’s is based on solid research, extensive scholarship, and meticulous preparation. For this performance they will play Haydn’s string quartet in D. Op 20 #2, Korngold’s String Quartet #2 in E-flat Major Op. 26, and Randall Thompson’s Alleluia.
The quartet members are Philipp Elssner and Lydia Forbes on violin, Myles Jordan on cello, and Kirsten Monke on viola.
DSQ will play at the Burnt Cove Church Community Center, operated by Opera House Arts, located at 17 Airport Road in Stonington. Tickets are $25 and are offered half-price for anyone age 17 and under. For more information or to purchase tickets visit operahousearts.org or call 207-367-2788.
