Every day the news, especially national news, becomes more and more outrageous and concerning. For instance, for many months masked men and women have been swarming people who might be violent criminals who are here illegally. These masked men and women have no apparent identification, but they are able to arrest and whisk away the suspects to unknown locations.
In our country, for many years hardworking, law-abiding people who are here from other countries have been seen as necessary workers in agriculture, construction, healthcare, and many other industries. Now some of these people are being whisked away and disappeared without due process.
Of course, there was the Big Beautiful Bill, which passed Congress and will now have untold effects across the country. Our local rural hospitals may be at risk for closure, according to an article in the July 16 edition of the BDN because of cuts to Medicaid. According to Sen. Angus King, many of the cuts wouldn’t have happened if the tax cuts were limited to people earning $400,00 and less a year. The savings from this could have been used to prevent cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.
Then there is also the announcement by DOGE that Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, will be used by federal agencies. Grok has been in the recent news for posting antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler on social media. That’s very concerning.
Lastly, there is the Jeffrey Epstein controversy. Every day now, that’s one of the top news stories. I say get the files out to the public cleared of all redactions. But even then, can we be sure the truth will come out?
