Boaters near Harpswell rescued a man and his dog after their vessel caught fire Saturday afternoon.
A fire south of Upper Flag Island was reported around 2:20 p.m., according to a Facebook post from Harpswell Marine Resources and Harbor Management. The post said a person and a dog were seen in the water.
Before first responders arrived, nearby boaters picked up the man and dog and brought them to a local Harpswell commercial wharf.
When rescue crews reached the scene, much of the boat had already burned. Shortly after firefighters extinguished the blaze, the vessel began to sink, according to the post.
The boat’s captain declined medical treatment but asked that his dog be evaluated, said officials.
