Bangor’s historic City Hall will reopen next month.
That marks the completion of 20 months of renovations to upgrade the building at 73 Harlow St. and make it more accessible. It’s the first major makeover to City Hall since the 1970s.
To prepare for the Aug. 11 reopening, the city’s temporary headquarters down the road at the Penquis building will be closed to the public Aug. 7-8.
When City Hall reopens, Bangor residents will find many services — including assessing, clerk and treasury, community and economic development, and planning — along with the council chambers, on the first floor.
City Hall also has a new, more energy efficient HVAC system, and a new elevator that meets federal requirements.
Beyond that, City Hall has seen a number of safety and security changes, including bulletproof glass.
“We’re excited to move back into an updated City Hall that will serve the people of Bangor for decades to come,” City Council Chair Cara Pelletier said in a Tuesday statement. “We’re very appreciative to Penquis for hosting municipal services at their building and to residents for their patience as we relocated city services during the renovation.”
There will be a public ceremony to mark the reopening. Details about that will be released in the coming weeks.
