Six new electric vehicle charging spots could be coming to Brewer.
Rivian, a California-based electric car company, has proposed the High Tide parking lot at 5 South Main St. as the next location for a charging station.
The station would be part of Rivian’s Adventure Network that builds quick charging stations “along popular routes and wilder destinations,” according to the company’s website.
The Brewer location would be the third Rivian station in Maine, and the first one north of Freeport. Rivian’s Kittery and Freeport charging stations opened last year.
The proposed charging station would take up the six spots closest to the Brewer Riverwalk and have four more nearby spaces open for an expansion. The spots were chosen because people could visit the restaurants, businesses and riverwalk nearby while waiting for their car to charge, a Rivian representative said at a Brewer planning board meeting on Monday.
The parking spaces are meant to charge a car in 30 to 35 minutes and will be open to all electric vehicles, not just Rivians. The spots will also be open for non-electric vehicles.
The Brewer Planning Board approved the site on Monday. The project will next be presented to the Brewer City Council at a future meeting.
