FORT KENT, Maine — Drivers are urged to use caution as work begins at two major Fort Kent intersections along Route 1. The work began on July 7 with delays and lane reductions anticipated to end on Aug. 30, according to Aroostook County Emergency Management.
The project, led by the Maine Department of Transportation and Madawaska-based general contractor Ed Pelletier & Sons Co., includes replacing the traffic signals at two Main Street intersections. The signal at the Pleasant Street and West Main Street intersection — or Route 11 and Route 1 — will be replaced along with the signal at East Main Street and Market Street, or Route 161 and Route 1.
Fort Kent Public Works Director Chad Pelletier said the project also includes widening the roadway at the Pleasant Street intersection and updating sidewalks at both locations to bring them up to ADA standards.
Pelletier said the entire project is expected to be finished in October, and that until then motorists can expect the road to be reduced to one lane at times.
“These intersections can get quite busy,” he said, “so drivers should expect some delays.”
Overall, Pelletier said the project will improve safety and traffic flow for drivers and pedestrians.
“The wider turn lanes and upgraded curbing and signage will make crossings safer and more accessible,” he said. “That said, the work zones will be active and occasionally hectic, so motorists who regularly travel through these intersections should allow extra time and plan ahead.”
