Evan Rachel Wood shot down speculation of her return to the Practical Magic universe.
The actress, 37, posted a statement via her Instagram Stories on Friday, July 11 clearing up any rumors surrounding her potential return for the sequel.
“I am getting asked about this a lot, so I’ll just clear it up now,” she wrote. “I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel.”
Wood said she was open to reprising her role as Kylie Owens, and reached out to express her interest.

“I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line,” she continued. “I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
The original Practical Magic, released in 1998, featured Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock at the helm. Kidman portrayed Gillian “Gilly” Owens, while Bullock played Sally Owens, sisters who were descendants from a long line of witches. Wood’s character Kylie was Sally’s eldest daughter.
Despite plans to recast Wood’s character, Kidman and Bullock are set to reprise their starring roles.
“Yes, I will be in it,” Kidman, 58, told People in June 2024. “And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.”
According to Entertainment Weekly on Friday, July 11, Diane Wiest and Stockard Channing will also return as Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny respectively. New cast members will include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
The outlet reported King will play one of Sally’s daughters, but it is unclear whether this is the same daughter Wood once portrayed.
Will Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Return for ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel?
Warner Bros. announced in June 2024 via TikTok that a follow-up to the original film, based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, is officially in “development.”
“I love the movie. It’s different than the book. The movie always has to be different than a book because you’re in such a different medium. But I feel so lucky that all those truly great actresses are in one movie,” Hoffman shared in an October 2021 interview. “The fact it’s about women and women’s relationships — at its core, it’s about a form of sisterhood — I think has made it more popular over the years. So, it’s kind of a cult movie. I feel really lucky to have been involved with it.”
Warner Bros. also confirmed a release date for the sequel, with September 18, 2026 slated as the date the movie will drop.
