There’s never any shortage of action movies to watch on streaming services like Netflix, Peacock and Hulu, but there are always titles that fall through the cracks.
Not every film is destined to be a breakout hit, and even some blockbusters can be forgotten 25 years later.
The Watch With Us team has selected our picks for the three underrated action movies that you should watch in July.
Our first pick is an action thriller, followed by an action comedy and a darkly political action film.
20 Years Later, This Groundbreaking Action Movie Still Holds Up
‘Sisu’ (2023)
Sisu may not have made much of a splash at the box office, but it got rave reviews from film critics. This action thriller is set during the waning days of World War II, as a former soldier, Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila), starts a new life as a very successful gold prospector.
While traveling with his gold, Korpi is attacked by retreating German forces led by Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie). These Nazis just can’t resist the lure of Korpi’s gold and break off their retreat to pursue him even after he murdered the first group of soldiers he went up against. Now, Bruno and his men have to learn the hard way why it was such a mistake to anger Korpi.

‘Shanghai Noon’ (2000)
It’s hard not to get some Rush Hour vibes from Shanghai Noon, an action comedy that also casts Jackie Chan as a fish out of water. Unlike Chan’s earlier franchise film, Shanghai Noon takes place in the 19th century and features him as an Imperial guard, Chon Wang. Princess Pei-Pei (Lucy Liu) has escaped from the Forbidden City only to find herself captured by Lo Fong (Roger Yuan) and trapped in America.

Chon finds an unlikely ally in former bandit Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson), who was overthrown as the leader of his gang by a man called Wallace (Walton Goggins). Roy sees the potential monetary reward of helping Chon complete his mission, but he may have found a friend as well.

‘V for Vendetta’ (2005)
The Wachowskis have been very hit or miss since the original Matrix trilogy ended over two decades ago, but their V for Vendetta screenplay is a bright spot. James McTeigue directed this adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd‘s 1982 comic and single-handedly made Guy Fawkes masks popular again.
Hugo Weaving stars as V, a violent revolutionary who hides his face under a Guy Fawkes mask even during his most private moments. In the near future, the United Kingdom is under the control of a fascist regime, and V is attempting to stoke the fires of rebellion. V chooses Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) as his closest friend and ally, and he’s determined to bring out her anti-establishment side as well.
