Bangor’s Pickering Square construction project should reach “substantial completion” by the first week of September, according to a city official.
The site, located between the Pickering Square parking garage and the Bangor Area Transit Center, was torn up in July 2024 but sat vacant for months, causing frustration for Bangor business owners and residents. Work resumed on the project earlier this week.
Landscapers have been preparing this week to put pavers down in the space, Jeff Davis, the city’s engineering director, said. He estimated that the project would be nearly complete — meaning that all of the paver placement and landscaping would be finished — by the first week of September.
Some “big ticket items,” including new amenities like in-ground lighting and an overhead trellis, have been on order since the fall but still may not be received and installed by September, Davis added.
The city has failed to meet several previous deadlines for the project. The work was initially supposed to finish by Halloween 2024. Most recently, the city said in May that the work would be completed by mid-July.
The project has been delayed multiple times due to issues with getting materials, the city has said.
