Penquis is proud to lead the Maine Highlands Economic Development Initiative, a community-centered planning effort designed to create sustainable, full-time jobs across rural Penobscot and Piscataquis counties. The initiative is one of only 10 projects nationwide awarded a Community Economic Development Planning Project grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Community Services.
Through this grant, Penquis and regional partners will design a new business project that supports long-term job creation and responds directly to the needs of Maine Highlands communities.
To ensure this effort is shaped by those who know the region best, Penquis is hosting a series of regional meetings to hear from residents, leaders, and local organizations. Each session will provide updates on the planning process and offer an opportunity for participants to help define the future of economic development in their area.
Community input will guide the plan. Residents will be invited to consider questions such as:
What kind of jobs would strengthen your community?
What services or businesses are currently missing?
What are the strengths and challenges of your local workforce?
What skills are already present—and could be supported closer to home?
