Martin Short was feeling some type of way before working with Meryl Streep on Only Murders in the Building.
“I remember the first day working with Meryl and driving to the studio and thinking, ‘I’m nervous today,’” Short, 75, shared during the Monday, June 30, appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. “I [hadn’t] been nervous going to the set for a long time.”
Streep, 76, made her debut on the Hulu show as Loretta Durkin during Only Murders in the Building season 3, which premiered in 2023.
“The first scene we shot in Only Murders was a scene where we’re at the piano and we’re, kind of, flirting a little bit,” Short recalled. “The first shot set up is over her to me, so pressure’s on me and then we break down so that they can reverse the cameras and do her side. We go into [the] holding area and she just says, ‘OK, nerves to half.’ I go, ‘Wait a second, I was nervous. You can’t be nervous.’”
Streep reprised her Only Murders in the Building role for season 4, which premiered in 2024. She’s also set to return for the upcoming fifth season, where the romance between Loretta and Short’s character, Oliver Putnam, will continue. (Their characters tied the knot during season 4.)

Last month, photos from the Only Murders in the Building season 5 set surfaced online, showing Short and Streep sharing a passionate kiss in character. Costar Selena Gomez also offered a behind-the-scenes look at the show’s set, with one image showing the duo getting cozy.
As their characters found love, speculation ran rampant that the costars also sparked a romance off camera. Short and Streep have made multiple public appearances together, but a rep for Short denied the pair were dating in a January 2024 statement.
Earlier this year, Amy Schumer sat next to Streep and Short at the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, hinting that the legendary stars might be more than friends.
“There’s really no one funnier to sit next to than Marty Short, who I got to sit next to at the homecoming concert the other night,” Schumer, 44, told People in February. “I think that the tea is, I think Marty might be off the market. That’s what I’m seeing. I don’t know. … Maybe by just, like, the greatest actor of our time, I don’t know.”
